Paws and Claws primarily works with our local shelter,  Berkeley Animal Care Services (BACS).  

You must attend the required training sessions in order to become a volunteer. You can choose to take the dog volunteer track or the cat volunteer track (or both).

Both tracks require you to attend General Orientation, which is a two hour session that introduces BACS’ procedures, rules, and statistics.

Depending on which track you decide to take after attending General Orientation, you must attend a cat and/or dog training class. This session goes over skills and procedures necessary to work with animals.

If you are taking the dog track, you will need to go through a final one-on-one session with a PNC mentor. This involves walking a dog with an experienced volunteer to make sure that you are capable and confident in working with dogs.

At general orientation, you will learn about the shelter’s color system that applies to every animal. If you would like to move up a color, let our club know, so we can connect you with an experienced volunteer to mentor you. 

Once you have completed these steps, you can volunteer whenever the shelter is open!
